God Is Sovereign in Salvation

This sermon emphasizes God's absolute sovereignty in salvation, arguing that He orchestrates every aspect of a person's rescue from sin. The speaker refutes the common misconception of sinners merely needing a "life preserver" to grab, instead illustrating them as spiritually dead, unwilling, and unable to contribute to their own rescue. The sermon presents six affirmations of God's sovereignty: He planned salvation in eternity past through unconditional election, accomplished it at the cross through Christ's atoning sacrifice, initiated it in time via an "effectual call" that irresistibly draws individuals, accomplished it at conversion by miraculously regenerating the spiritually dead, is working it out throughout this life by enabling sanctification, and will complete it in future glorification. This foundational truth demands a specific response: unbelievers must humble themselves as beggars before God, crying out for mercy; believers are called to overflowing gratitude and praise; and all are encouraged in evangelism and prayer, trusting that God uses the gospel message to draw His chosen to Himself. Ultimately, God's sovereignty in salvation from beginning to end is a profound source of comfort and assurance for believers.

God Is Sovereign

In the sermon "God Is Sovereign," Tom Pennington addresses the often-forgotten truth of God's absolute sovereignty and active providence, contrasting it with worldly philosophies like naturalism, fatalism, chance, and self-determinism. He defines sovereignty as God's inherent nature to rule and providence as the active outworking of this sovereignty in every detail of life. God not only preserves all He created but also governs everything to fulfill His eternal plan: redeeming the elect, exalting Christ, and glorifying Himself. Pennington explains that God's intricate control extends to the physical world (weather, nature), the affairs of nations (rulers, history), seemingly accidental events (like a king's insomnia or an arrow's flight), and individual livesincluding birth, successes, failures, and even sinful actions. He clarifies that God is not the source of evil but prevents, permits, limits, and directs sin toward His ultimate good, exemplified by Joseph's story. While human free will and natural laws exist, God superintends these secondary causes to guarantee His will.

The Bible Has One Message

Pastor Tom Pennington argues that the Bible, like any great book, possesses one unifying message, a "forgotten truth" often missed by Christians and pastors who treat it as a collection of random self-help verses. He guides listeners to John 17, Jesus' longest recorded prayer, as the key to understanding this central theme. From this prayer, the Bible's overarching message is revealed: "God is redeeming a people, by His Son, for His Son, to His Own glory." Breaking this theme down, "God" initiated this eternal plan of redemption, with Jesus, who is God, executing it. "Redeeming" signifies a continuous process: salvation from sin's penalty, sanctification from its power through God's Word, and future glorification from its presence. This rescue is for "a people," a specific group chosen by God, evident in their willingness to believe and repent. This is accomplished "by His Son," Jesus, who died on the cross to absorb God's just wrath against sin. Ultimately, this redemptive plan is "for His Son," as redeemed humanity is the Father's gift to Christ, designed to reflect His glory. The supreme purpose behind this entire endeavor is "to His Own glory.

God Alone Is Great!

Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon "God Alone Is Great!" is part of the "Hold Fast: The Forgotten Truths We Must Always Remember" series. He introduces the sermon with the historical anecdote of preacher Massillon extinguishing a candle on King Louis XIV's coffin to declare, "Only God is great." Pennington argues that this foundational truth has been tragically forgotten in the modern church, often replaced by flawed, humanized conceptions of God, such as "the man upstairs" or "the good-natured buddy." Drawing from Isaiah 40:12-26, Pennington outlines four declarations of God's unparalleled greatness. First, Yahweh alone is the all-wise Creator, effortlessly measuring oceans in His hand and spanning the heavens, needing no counsel. Second, Yahweh alone is incomparable; nations and humanity are utterly insignificant before Him, likened to a "drop from a bucket" or "a speck of dust." Third, Yahweh alone is God, distinct from all weak, human-made idols. Finally, Yahweh alone is sovereign, ruling over earth's people (who appear like "grasshoppers"), its transient leaders, and the entire universe, calling countless stars by name. Pennington asserts that understanding God's transcendent greatness is profoundly practical, offering comfort in trouble and a firm assurance of His willingness and ability to redeem those who repent.

Scripture is Enough

Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon, "Hold Fast," stresses the foundational Christian truth: "The Bible Is Enough." He likens this to a lifeline, drawing from the nautical term "hold fast," which denotes gripping essential ropes during a storm. Pennington argues that today, many Christians neglect this truth, opting for "cheap substitutes" like mysticism, tradition, human experts, or secular psychology, rather than God's objective Word. The Bible, however, consistently asserts its own sufficiency for all aspects of faith and practice. Psalm 1 vividly illustrates this, contrasting the righteous with the wicked. The righteous abandon all human waysthe counsel of the wicked, the path of sinners, and the seat of scoffers. Instead, their defining characteristic is delighting in and meditating on God's Law (the Bible) day and night, shaping their entire lives. This commitment leads to a blessed, fruitful existence. The sermon highlights practical implications: Scripture is God's complete revelation, His sole means of speaking to us today, and the ultimate authority for our beliefs and actions. A biblical church and mature Christian life are centered on God's Word. We must wholeheartedly embrace the Bible's perspective on everything.

The Redeemer - Part 2

The Book of Ruth, chronicling God's remarkable providence, details the redemption of a Moabite widow. The story begins with Naomi and her family leaving Israel for Moab due to famine, leading to the deaths of her husband and sons. Naomi returns home, accompanied by Ruth, who converts to worship the true God. God providentially leads Ruth to glean in the fields of Boaz, a kinsman-redeemer. Following Naomi's plan, Ruth proposes marriage, and Boaz, after fulfilling legal obligations, marries her. Their son, Obed, becomes a redeemer for Naomi, restoring her joy and providing care in her old age, and is blessed as an ancestor of King David. The book concludes with a genealogy tracing Obed's lineage back to Perez, son of Judah, revealing God's overarching purpose: to establish the royal line from which the promised Messiah, the ultimate Redeemer for all mankind, would come. Through these seemingly ordinary lives, God demonstrates His sovereign providence, meticulously orchestrating events to fulfill His eternal saving plan.
