Jesus: The Sovereign of Disease & Death
Tom Pennington's sermon, "Jesus: The Sovereign of Disease & Death," from Mark 5:21-43, highlights Jesus as the ultimate source of hope in desperate circumstances. He presents two individuals whose situations were humanly hopeless: Jairus, an influential synagogue official whose 12-year-old daughter was dying, and an anonymous woman who had suffered a debilitating hemorrhage for twelve years, rendering her an outcast and financially ruined. Both, at the end of their resources, sought Jesus in desperate acts of faith. Jairus risked his reputation by publicly imploring Jesus for his daughter's healing. Simultaneously, the hemorrhaging woman, believing that merely touching Jesus' cloak would make her well, pushed through the crowd. Jesus immediately healed her, prompting her to a public confession of faith, clarifying that her belief in Himnot superstitionbrought spiritual salvation alongside physical restoration. While conversing with the woman, Jairus received news that his daughter had died. Jesus, hearing this, immediately commanded Jairus, "Do not be afraid any longer, only believe." Upon arriving at Jairus' home, Jesus expelled the professional mourners, entered the girl's room, and simply commanded, "Talitha kum!" (Little girl, get up!), instantly raising her from the dead.
Old Testament: Judges to Monarchy - Part 2
This text, "Old Testament Judges to Monarchy (Part 2)," explores the significant movements of Old Testament history, underscoring God's central theme of redeeming a people through His Son. It focuses on the monarchy period, particularly the books of 1 and 2 Kings, which were written during Israel's exile to explain their consistent covenant violations, justify the captivity, and urge repentance. The sermon details King Solomon's reign, initially marked by wisdom and temple building, but tragically ending in apostasy due to his foreign wives and their idolatry. This sin led to God's judgment and the kingdom's division after Solomon's death, largely accomplished through Rehoboam's foolishness. The Northern Kingdom (Israel) and Southern Kingdom (Judah) diverged significantly, with the North consistently embracing Jeroboam's substitute worship and later Baalism under Ahab and Jezebel. Prophets like Elijah and Elisha emerged as God's messengers, confronting kings and calling the people to account, foreshadowing the need for a righteous king. Despite numerous warnings, rampant idolatry ultimately led to the Assyrian and Babylonian exiles.
The Amazing Benefits of Justification - Part 4
This sermon, "The Amazing Benefits of Justification (Part 4)" from Romans 5:1-11, explains the immediate benefits accompanying being declared righteous by God through faith. These benefits offer assurance and security in Christ. Building on previously discussed benefits like peace with God and hope in His glory, Pastor Tom Pennington introduces the final two: being saved from God's wrath (verses 9-10) and exulting in God's person (verse 11). Pennington argues that if God accomplished the "greater" act of justifying us, His enemies, through Christ's death, then He will certainly perform the "lesser" act of saving us from future wrath through Christ's life. He clarifies that "salvation" has past, present, and future aspects, focusing here on future deliverance from divine judgment, a truth consistently taught in the New Testament. He also highlights reconciliation, where God brought hostile sinners into relationship with Himself through Christ. Finally, believers are called to exult in God's person, delighting in His character and attributes. This represents the pinnacle of spiritual maturity. The sermon concludes by urging listeners to grasp justification by faith alone, meditate on these truths, and apply them for deeper assurance and joy in their Christian walk.
The Amazing Benefits of Justification - Part 3
This sermon, "The Amazing Benefits of Justification (Part 3)" from Romans 5:1-11, explores the profound nature of God's love for believers, contrasting it with conditional human affection. Unlike human love, which is often based on desirable qualities, God's love for us is entirely unconditional, stemming solely from His own character, not from anything in uswe were helpless, ungodly sinners, His enemies. This divine love is eternal, not an afterthought, but part of God's predetermined plan for us since before the foundation of the world, having no beginning or end. It is also sacrificial, dramatically demonstrated by Christ's death as our substitute, bearing God's wrath to satisfy divine justice. This love is radical because, unlike human love that might sacrifice for a friend, God sent His Son to die for His antagonists. Furthermore, Gods love is categorical, undeniably proved by the cross, which perpetually demonstrates both the Father's willingness to offer His unique Son and Christ's voluntary sacrifice. This unchanging, eternal, and radical love ensures that nothing can separate believers from God's unwavering favor, forming the ultimate ground of their confidence and assurance in Him.
Old Testament: Judges to Monarchy - Part 1
This sermon provides an aerial tour of Old Testament history, emphasizing its instructional value. It covers the Conquest and Division of Canaan (Joshua), the Period of the Judges (Judges and Ruth), and the early Monarchy (1 Samuel), focusing on Saul and David. The Book of Joshua describes Israel's conquest and the land's division, fulfilling God's promises. However, Israel's incomplete obedience in driving out the Canaanites led to future problems. The text explains Canaanite Baal worship's depravity, characterized by sexual perversion and child sacrifice, justifying God's command for extermination. The Period of the Judges, following Joshua's death, was a dark era lacking national leadership, where "every man did what was right in his own eyes." This resulted in a cycle of sin (intermarriage, idolatry), divine judgment (oppression), supplication, and God raising local deliverers. The Book of Ruth, set during this time, highlights loyalty and God's redemptive work, tracing David's genealogy. The transition to Monarchy, guided by Samuel, occurred because Israel demanded a king prematurely and for the wrong reasons, essentially rejecting God. Yet, God had a plan for kings, who were to rule under His law and be accountable to prophets.
The Amazing Benefits of Justification - Part 2
In "The Amazing Benefits of Justification (Part 2)," Pastor Tom Pennington emphasizes the profound blessings accompanying a believer's justification, often overlooked like a hidden treasure. Building on prior benefits of peace with God, standing in His grace, and hoping in His glory, the sermon introduces two more immediate advantages from Romans 5:1-11. Firstly, justified believers can **rejoice in tribulations**. Unlike common responses of denial or anger, Christians can find joy in suffering by *knowing* God uses trials to produce perseverance. This endurance, a steadfast remaining under pressure, builds proven character, confirming the authenticity of our faith and fostering spiritual maturity. This strengthened character then produces hope, assuring us of future glory. Secondly, Christians gain **confidence in God's unconditional love**. This love, lavishly "poured out" by the Holy Spirit at salvation, assures believers of God's unwavering affection. Its unconditional nature is evident because Christ died for humanity when we were utterly helpless, ungodly, and sinful, not because of any merit within us, but solely due to God's own benevolent character. This divine love, therefore, remains constant and steadfast, providing profound comfort and eternal security.
