Oil & Water
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon "1 John Oil & Water" powerfully asserts the complete incompatibility of genuine faith in Jesus Christ and a habitual lifestyle of sin, using the analogy of oil and water. Focusing on 1 John 3:4-6, Pennington explains that a consistent pattern of sin signifies a lack of true knowledge of Christ, irrespective of personal claims. He elaborates on four reasons for this incompatibility. First, habitual sin contradicts God's Law, as sin is inherently lawlessnessan active rebellion against God's revealed will. True believers, through spiritual regeneration, receive a new love and capacity to obey God's commands, making a life of perpetual sin impossible. Second, such a lifestyle is at odds with Christ's mission, given that Jesus "appeared in order to take away sins" through His sacrificial death. Third, it is inconsistent with Christ's nature, for "in Him there is no sin"; Jesus is eternally pure, never having committed sin nor possessing a sin nature. Finally, a life marked by habitual sin is incompatible with Christ's Gospel. Pennington emphasizes that "no one who abides in Him sins," meaning true, saving belief in Jesus and His gospel results in a life where sin is not the governing principle.
The Woman, her Son, and the Dragon - Part 3
This sermon, "The Woman, her Son, and the Dragon (Part 3)," from Revelation 12, explores Satan's ceaseless war against God's people, particularly Israel, a hatred evident throughout history as antisemitism. Following his defeat in a heavenly war, Satan, symbolized as the "dragon," is cast to Earth during the Tribulation. Enraged and knowing his time is short, he intensifies his efforts to thwart God's plans. Satan's objectives include preventing Christ's kingdom, deceiving unbelievers, and destroying all believers, especially Israel, the "woman" who bore the Messiah. He instigates the Antichrist to break a covenant with Israel, setting up the "abomination of desolation" in the rebuilt temple, initiating severe persecution. Though two-thirds of Jews may perish, God supernaturally preserves a remnant. These survivors are given "eagle's wings" (divine protection) to flee to a wilderness "place prepared by God," where they are nourished for 3.5 years (the Great Tribulation). Satan pursues them with Antichrist's invading armies, depicted as a "river" of water, but the "earth helps the woman" by miraculously consuming the flood. Thwarted in his attempts against Israel, Satan redirects his rage to "the rest of her children"all worldwide believers, Jew and Gentile, who keep God's commandments and hold to Jesus' testimony.
The Woman, her Son, and the Dragon - Part 2
The sermon explores Revelation 12, revealing Satan's character, domain, and future during the Tribulation. Satan, who fell after creation, currently governs the rebellious world and surrounding heavenly realms, with permitted access to God to accuse believers "day and night." Revelation 12 depicts Israel ("the woman") giving birth to the Messiah ("the Son"), whom Satan ("the dragon") sought to devour. Yet, Christ was born, lived, died, rose, and ascended victoriously. At the Tribulation's midpoint, a decisive war breaks out in heaven. Satan, with his fallen angels, futilely attacks God's throne, but Michael and holy angels defeat them. Satan is then permanently cast from heaven to Earth. Heaven erupts in celebration over God's assured salvation, power, and kingdom, rejoicing that the ceaseless "accuser of our brethren" is banished. Conversely, Earth faces "woe" as Satan, knowing his time is short (3.5 years), unleashes his great wrath, particularly on Israel. Believers overcome Satan through "the blood of the Lamb" and faithful testimony, even when facing death. The sermon concludes by affirming God's limitless power, the futility of human opposition, and the assurance that God disregards Satan's accusations against His children due to Christ's unwavering intercession.
The Christian's DNA - Part 5
In "The Christians DNA (Part 5)," Pastor Tom Pennington uses the Milli Vanilli scandal to illustrate the difference between genuine and fraudulent faith, emphasizing that true Christians, "born of God," possess divine "DNA" evident in their progressive sanctification. Drawing from 1 John 2:28-3:3, he explains that the new birth provides a new nature, compelling believers to actively pursue Christ-like purity. Sanctification is the continuous process of dying to sin and growing in righteousness, motivated by the confident hope of future glorificationseeing Jesus and becoming like Him. Believers actively "purify themselves" (1 John 3:3), not passively, but by expending maximum effort in obedience, enabled by God working within them. Jesus Christ serves as the sinless pattern and goal for this purification. Key means include living by faith, applying God's Word, active obedience (putting off old patterns and putting on new ones), depending completely on the Holy Spirit, and prayer. Pennington concludes that if this pursuit of holiness is not the direction of one's life, despite professing Christ, they are a "fraud" and need genuine repentance and heart change.
The Woman, her Son, and the Dragon - Part 1
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon, "The Woman, her Son, and the Dragon," unpacks Revelation 12:1-6, an interlude in the Tribulation narrative focusing on Satan's cosmic war against God. The "woman" in this passage symbolizes Israel, chosen by God and suffering "labor pains" from Satan's historical attempts to prevent the Messiah's birth through their destruction. The "great red dragon" represents Satan, a ferocious, murderous being whose ancient rebellion caused a third of angels to fall. Despite Satan's consistent efforts to thwart God's plan, the "male child" Jesus, born of Israel fulfills his destiny to rule all nations with an "iron rod." His ascension to God's throne signifies the completion of his redemptive work and his definitive victory over Satan's attempts to destroy him after birth. Looking to the future, Revelation 12:6 summarizes Israel's flight into the wilderness during the Great Tribulation's final 3.5 years (1260 days), where God will supernaturally nourish and protect them from Satan's intensified persecution. The sermon concludes by reminding believers they are soldiers in this spiritual war, with their minds as a primary battleground, using God's Word and prayer as their weapons.
The Seventh Trumpet: The Beginning of the End
This sermon, based on Revelation 11:14-19, details the sounding of the seventh trumpet, signifying the beginning of the end of the seven-year Tribulation. This event, the third and final woe, culminates God's divine wrath and heralds the imminent return and eternal reign of Jesus Christ. Heavenly voices declare, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ," a certainty pronounced as if already accomplished. The 24 elders, representing the redeemed, fall in worship, giving thanks to the Almighty God, who is and was. They praise Him for seizing His great power to reign, for justly pouring out His wrath on enraged nations, and for judging all humanityrewarding His bond-servants (prophets and saints) while destroying those who defile the earth with sin. The appearance of the Ark of the Covenant in the opened heavenly temple further assures God's faithfulness to redeem His people and fulfill His promises of judgment. The seventh trumpet sets in motion the final bowl judgments and Christ's glorious return, establishing His millennial and eternal kingdom, ensuring His ultimate victory.
