This Is Your Life - Part 1
Pastor Tom Pennington introduces Ephesians 2:1-10 as a passage that profoundly impacted his personal Christian life, underscoring the necessity of understanding foundational doctrine before practical application. The core message of this Scripture is that salvation is entirely the work of God, from beginning to end, highlighting His sovereign role in regeneration. Pennington focuses on verses 1-3, which describe humanity's natural state as "spiritually dead." This isn't physical death, but a pervasive condition of "total depravity" where every aspect of human nature is corrupted by sin, rendering individuals unable to do anything spiritually good. He uses the metaphor of the "walking dead" to illustrate humans as physically alive but spiritually alienated from God. This spiritual death results in several incapacities: humans cannot act contrary to their sinful nature, enter God's kingdom, perform spiritually good deeds, understand or believe God's truth, obey God, please God, or even come to Christ for salvation without divine intervention. This dire spiritual state demands God's merciful intervention to bring life where there was only death, affirming that salvation is solely God's work.
An Aerial View of the Old Testament - Part 5
This sermon, "An Aerial View of the Old Testament Part 5," covers the final two movements of Old Testament history: the Babylonian exile and the restoration period. The exile began with three deportations (606/605 BC, 597 BC, 586 BC), fulfilling Jeremiah's prophecy of 70 years' captivity due to Israel's idolatry, and included the departure of God's glory from the Temple. During this time, prophets like Daniel and Ezekiel ministered, highlighting God's sovereignty and a future restoration. The restoration commenced with Cyrus the Great's decree in 538 BC, predicted by Isaiah. It unfolded in three returns: Zerubbabel rebuilt the Temple (Ezra 1-6), Ezra purified the people's worship by addressing intermarriage and re-emphasizing God's Law (Ezra 7-10), and Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem's walls against fierce opposition (Nehemiah 1-6). The speaker emphasizes two key themes throughout Ezra-Nehemiah: God's invisible providence, guiding events and kings, and the paramount importance of obedience to God's written Word, especially as direct miraculous interventions and prophets (Malachi being the last) became less frequent. This period teaches that God consistently works through His providence and Word, offering help and comfort to His people.
The Sign - Part 3
The sermon "The Sign (Part 3)" by Tom Pennington explores the profound significance of Isaiah 7:14, the Old Testament prophecy of Christ's unique virgin birth. Set against King Ahaz's desperate need for salvation and his hypocritical refusal to ask for a confirming sign, God nevertheless declared, "Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel." This miraculous sign points to four crucial truths about God. First, it establishes Yahweh as the only true God, evidenced by His unparalleled ability to declare the future (over 700 years in advance) and bring it to pass, unlike any false deity. Second, it reveals Yahweh's sovereignty over human history, orchestrating both judgment for Judah's sins and His intricate plan of salvation. The virgin birth miraculously resolved the legal and biological lineage issues (like Jeconiah's curse), ensuring Jesus could be both David's legal heir and the sinless Messiah. Third, the sign affirms that Yahweh alone provides physical deliverance, as promised to Ahaz from invading kings, contrasting sharply with Ahaz's futile reliance on worldly alliances. Finally, and most importantly, it highlights that Yahweh accomplishes spiritual salvation through the coming Messiah.
The Sign - Part 2
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon "The Sign (Part 2)" from Isaiah 7:1-17 defends the crucial doctrine of Jesus' virgin birth, which he notes is increasingly under attack, even by many clergy who dismiss it as myth or mistranslation. The sermon contextualizes Isaiah 7, recalling King Ahaz's desperate need for salvation amidst military threats and his hypocritical refusal to ask God for a miraculous sign. Despite Ahaz's unbelief, God unilaterally gives a sign in Isaiah 7:14: "Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel." Pennington rigorously argues for "virgin" (Hebrew: *alma*) through linguistic evidence, the contextual demand for a miracle, the Septuagint's translation, and the definitive New Testament testimony in Matthew 1:23 and Luke 1. He emphasizes that this sign refers exclusively to Jesus Christ. His conception was unique, and Mary remained a virgin until His birth, fulfilling the prophecy of a virgin bearing a son. Jesus' name, Immanuel ("God with us"), signifies His divine and human natureGod condescending to be among humanity. Jesus *is* God's ultimate sign to Ahaz and to us, demonstrating that God is a savior, willing to rescue those who turn to Him from sin and wrath.
The Sign - Part 1
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon, "The Sign (Part 1)," examines Isaiah 7:1-17, emphasizing the critical historical context behind the prophecy of Immanuel in Isaiah 7:14. He divides the passage into three scenes, starting with "Man's Desperate Need of Salvation," focusing on King Ahaz of Judah. Ahaz, a wicked king despite his godly lineage, led Judah into idolatry and crisis. His nation faced existential threat from an alliance between Aram and Israel, resulting in massive casualties and a siege of Jerusalem. Pennington explains this crisis was both God's judgment for Judah's sin and a gracious act to humble Ahaz, bringing him to the end of his self-reliance. The second scene, "God's Gracious Offer of Salvation," details God sending Prophet Isaiah ("Yahweh is salvation") and his son Shear-jashub ("a remnant will return") to Ahaz. God offered Ahaz deliverance, telling him not to fear his enemies, whom God called "two stubs of smoldering firebrands." He promised the alliance would fail and urged Ahaz to "believe," warning that unbelief would lead to destruction. Tragically, Ahaz rejected God's offer, seeking help from Assyria instead and intensifying his idolatry.
Praying For the Person Who Has Everything - Part 6
Tom Pennington's sermon "Praying for the Person Who Has Everything" focuses on Paul's prayer in Ephesians 1:15-23, urging believers to grasp God's immeasurable power working within them. He illustrates God's incomprehensible power through the immense forces within creation, like atoms, before detailing Paul's prayer for spiritual illumination. Paul prays for believers to understand three spiritual blessings: the hope of God's calling, the riches of His inheritance, and the surpassing greatness of His power directed toward those who believe. To help comprehend this power, Paul provides three examples from Christ's life: 1. **His Resurrection and Ascension:** God's power raised Christ from the dead and seated Him far above all spiritual authorities, signifying His ultimate triumph. This same power gives believers new life, freeing them from sin and Satan's dominion. 2. **Subjection of All Things to Christ:** God placed everything under Christ's feet, demonstrating His absolute control and ensuring the defeat of all enemies, including death and the flesh, guaranteeing believers' future glorification. 3. **Christ's Headship over the Church:** God made Christ the head of the church, His body, which in a unique sense completes Him. This signifies an inseparable union, assuring believers of their perfection and presence with Him.
