Jesus: 30 Years of Ordinary

Tom Pennington's sermon, "Jesus: 30 Years of Ordinary," shifts focus from Christ's miraculous birth and three-and-a-half-year ministry to the profound significance of His 30 "ordinary" years. After His birth, Jesus' early life included circumcision, presentation at the Temple (revealing His family's humble means), a flight to Egypt to escape Herod's massacre, and eventual settlement in the small, unassuming town of Nazareth. During these years, Jesus grew physically, mentally, and spiritually, diligently studying the Scriptures and learning multiple languages. As the eldest son, and after Joseph's likely death, He took on the family carpentry business, supporting His mother and at least six younger siblings. Despite His own family initially disbelieving His claims, Jesus lived a perfectly sinless life of quiet obedience and toil. These 30 years offer two crucial lessons. First, Jesus' ordinary life serves as an encouragement and pattern for believers to glorify God in their own predictable routines, demonstrating dignity and nobility in commonplace duties. Second, and more profoundly, these years are the source of the perfect righteousness imputed to us. Jesus lived the sinless life we could not, and this perfect obedience, combined with His atoning death, is credited to those who believe, reconciling them to God.

The Birth of the Messiah - Part 3

In Matthew 1:18-25, Pastor Tom Pennington explains how Jesus' birth proves He is Israel's promised Messiah and rightful king, highlighting five unique characteristics. First, His unique conception by the Holy Spirit in the virgin Mary demonstrates His divine origin and fulfills Isaiah 7:14's prophecy of "Immanuel" (God with us). Second, His unique mission is to save His people from their sins, revealed in His name "Jesus," meaning "Yahweh saves," affirming His deity and ability to pay sin's infinite debt. Third, His unique credentials are His birth as foretold by Isaiah 700 years prior, making Him the sole fulfillment. Fourth, His unique person is the God-man, fully divine and fully human, uniquely qualified as a substitute for humanity while bearing God's wrath. Finally, His unique pedigree allows Him to be the legal heir to David's throne through Joseph's adoption, circumventing the curse on Jeconiah's physical descendants due to the virgin birth. Matthew presents these events as undeniable proof for strengthening believers' faith and calling all to repent and trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior.

The Birth of the Messiah - Part 2

This sermon application guide, "The Birth of the Messiah Part 2" from Matthew 1:1825, focuses on five unique characteristics Matthew presents to prove Jesus is the rightful King and Messiah. Key points include His unique conception, emphasizing His divine origin, and His unique mission as detailed in verse 21. This mission identifies "Yahweh" as its author, characterized by salvation, and Jesus as its executorqualified as God with a passion for His people and a singular mission of salvation. The application section prompts significant personal reflection and commitment. It encourages individuals to identify and combat Christmas distractions from worshipping Christ, contemplate the spiritual benefits from Christ's birth, life, and resurrection, and express thankfulness. It also challenges believers to analyze how false gospels, like the prosperity gospel, diverge from Christ's specific salvific mission and how true believers can be influenced. Ultimately, it calls for concrete commitments to visibly demonstrate one's faith in Jesus and exclusive worship of Him to unbelievers.

The Birth of the Messiah - Part 1

This text serves as a sermon application guide from Countryside Bible Church, complementing a sermon titled "The Birth of the Messiah Part 1," derived from Matthew 1:1825. The sermon's central theme posits that Matthew highlights five distinct characteristics proving Jesus's rightful status as the King and Messiah, beginning with His unique conception as detailed in verses 1820. The guide offers four reflection and application questions designed for personal study or group discussion. These questions prompt individuals to examine their prior beliefs about Jesus before conversion and what influenced their change of mind. Participants are also encouraged to share experiences engaging with people who hold differing views of Jesus compared to the biblical presentation. Furthermore, the questions invite discussion on practical Christian applications drawn from Joseph's respectful actions towards Mary, even in a difficult situation. Finally, the guide asks individuals to reflect on past holiday seasons and how they provided opportunities to share Christ and the gospel with family, friends, and others, emphasizing practical evangelism.

All the World's A Stage - Archive

This sermon application from Countryside Bible Church, "All the Worlds Stage" (Ephesians 2:110), emphasizes that Gods eternal plan of redemption is fundamentally about His glory, not humanity. The sermon's outline progresses from humanity's past state ("What We Were") to God's transformative action ("What God Did"), culminating in His divine motivation ("Why God Did It"). It highlights that God displays His grace and eternal kindness across all moments of time, from eternity past to eternity future. The application section encourages profound personal reflection and discussion. Participants are prompted to recall their realization of being "dead in trespasses and sins" and, if comfortable, to share their testimonies. It also asks how understanding that redemption is God-centric changes their daily lives and challenges them to identify daily experiences of God's grace, particularly during the holiday season. Crucially, the application stresses the importance of presenting a gospel message that magnifies God, rather than man, when evangelizing the lost, ensuring God's ultimate sovereignty and glory in salvation are upheld.

Give Thanks & Sing! - Archive 2016-11-20

Countryside Bible Church's sermon application on Psalm 92:1-4, originally preached in 2016, emphasizes that this psalm celebrates God's works in redemptive history, specifically highlighting the spiritual value of God's people giving thanks and praise. The application outlines that thanksgiving is inherently "good" and finds its primary expressions through prayer and singing. The core reasons for offering thanks are identified as God's steadfast love and His unwavering faithfulness. The reflection and application questions encourage deep personal engagement with these themes. Believers are prompted to assess how often they give thanks to God and identify practical methods to improve this crucial aspect of their Christian life. The questions also challenge individuals to examine their commitment to singing during corporate worship, ensuring full investment in praising God. Furthermore, the application encourages contemplating how God's lovingkindness should motivate thanksgiving and discussing specific ways God continues to demonstrate His faithfulness in one's life. This encourages a holistic approach to gratitude, encompassing both private devotion and communal worship.
