It Matters What You Believe - Part 6
In this sermon on 1 John 2:18-27, Pastor Tom Pennington asserts that while human polygraphs are unreliable, Christians possess a 100% accurate "lie detector" for fundamental doctrines: the Holy Spirit. This passage, part of 1 John's series of "Tests of Eternal Life" (moral, social, and doctrinal), focuses on the critical importance of what one believes. A true Christian consistently believes, knows, and perseveres in the biblical truth about Jesus Christ and the biblical gospelsalvation by God's grace through faith, not works. This perseverance is supernaturally enabled and protected by God's power, bringing the promises of real assurance and eternal life, defined as a present and eternal relationship with God and Jesus. The text also issues a strong warning against false teaching, identifying it as a real, constant, subtle, and personal danger. Our primary protection against such deception comes from two divine resources: the infallible Word of God and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit, indwelling every believer from salvation, continually teaches essential truths and acts as an internal, accurate discerning agent, preventing genuine Christians from embracing damning heresy. Ultimately, passing these tests provides assurance of eternal life, while failing them necessitates repentance and belief in the true gospel.
The Borrowed Tomb
The text highlights the essential, yet often overlooked, significance of Jesus' burial in the Christian gospel, alongside His death and resurrection. Historically, Jesus was buried in a "borrowed tomb" near Jerusalem's western gate, a site now likely commemorated by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Mark 15:42-47 provides five key pieces of evidence: Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy, influential, but secret disciple, courageously risked everything to ask Pilate for Jesus' body. Pilate legally certified Jesus' death through a centurion (who had pierced Jesus' side), officially granting the corpse to Joseph. Joseph, aided by Nicodemus, traditionally prepared Jesus' body with linen and spices, placing it in Joseph's own new, rock-hewn tomb, sealed with a large stone. Finally, Mary Magdalene and Mary, mother of Joses, served as principal witnesses to the tomb's location. Jesus' burial proved His credentials as the Messiah, confirmed His innocence from God's perspective, documented His substitutionary death for sins, and certified that He was truly dead. Most crucially, it identified the precise location of His tomb, establishing an unassailable foundation for the greatest proof of the resurrection: the empty tomb.
The Worship Jesus Loves
This sermon by Tom Pennington, based on Mark 14:3-9, explores "The Worship Jesus Loves" through the account of Mary anointing Jesus with expensive perfume. Mary's act of breaking an alabaster vial of pure nard, worth a year's wages, and pouring it on Jesus's head and feet was an extravagant and humble display of devotion. The disciples, particularly Judas Iscariot (who was a thief), were indignant, criticizing it as a waste that could have been given to the poor. Jesus, however, defended Mary, declaring, "She has done a good deed for Me." He explained that worship is a "beautiful work" and a higher priority than charity, stating, "You always have the poor with you... but you do not always have Me." Jesus revealed that Mary had "anointed My body beforehand for the burial," demonstrating her profound theological understanding of His imminent atoning death. The sermon emphasizes that the worship Jesus loves is extravagant, humble, unashamed, and rooted in a deep understanding of His sacrifice. It teaches that worshipping Jesus from the heart is our highest priority, both individually and corporately, and involves listening to His word and contemplating His death on the cross.
The Seventh Seal & the First Six Trumpets - Part 4
Pastor Tom Pennington addresses how God interacts with evil, especially as Revelation 9 describes demons enacting judgment. He clarifies that God is not evil's source; it originated in Satan's pride. Evil, an absence of God and good, is not a separate entity. God neither tempts nor forces evil but sovereignly allows and uses itpreventing, permitting, limiting, and directing it for His purposeswhile remaining completely untainted. The sermon then details the sixth trumpet judgment. Prompted by saints' prayers, four bound demons are released at the Euphrates. They lead a 200-million-strong demonic cavalry, unleashing a "murderous genocide" that kills a third of humanity. These terrifying creatures, with lion-headed horses spewing fire, smoke, and brimstone, and serpent-like tails, represent horrific destruction. Yet, God mercifully limits the plague, offering survivors an opportunity for repentance. Shockingly, the remaining two-thirds of humanity refuse to repent. They persist in worshipping idols (demonically inspired) of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, despite these idols' inability to see, hear, or walk. They also do not abandon murders, sorceries (drug-induced pagan rituals), immorality, or thefts. This profound unrepentance highlights humanity's extreme depravity.
It Matters What You Believe - Part 5
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon, based on 1 John 2:18-27, underscores the critical importance of believing the "true biblical Jesus and the true biblical gospel." He opens with a compelling anecdote about Maury, a man who found salvation just weeks before his death, illustrating the gospel's transformative power. Pennington then outlines the essential gospel through four core truths, often referred to as "The Romans Road": 1. **God the Creator:** There is one perfectly holy God who created all things and reveals Himself through creation and conscience, demanding perfect obedience to His law. 2. **Man the Sinner:** All humanity has sinned against God, inheriting a sinful nature from Adam and actively rebelling, falling short of God's glory. Our sin justly earns death and eternal punishment, and no human effort can achieve self-salvation. 3. **Jesus the Savior:** Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, came to save sinners. He lived a life of perfect obedience and then, through His substitutionary death on the cross, fully satisfied God's wrath against the sins of those who believe. God's act of raising Jesus from the dead confirmed His divine claims. 4.
The Seventh Seal & the First Six Trumpets - Part 3
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon "The Seventh Seal & the First Six Trumpets (Part 3)" from Revelation 8-9 details God's escalating judgments. Following four trumpets that cause environmental devastation to prompt repentance, an eagle announces three woes, signaling severe judgments specifically targeting the unsaved. The fifth trumpet unleashes grotesque, demonic "locusts" from the bottomless pit, opened by a holy angel at Christ's command. These entities, led by Abaddon/Apollyon (the Destroyer), are described with bizarre appearances, including features of warhorses, men, lions, and scorpions, indicating their ferocity and intelligence. Their mission is strictly controlled by God: they are forbidden from harming vegetation or those sealed by God. Instead, for five months, they inflict agonizing, scorpion-like torment on the unsaveda pain so severe that people desperately seek death but are unable to find it. This horrific judgment serves to expose Satan and his demons' true hateful nature toward humanity, while simultaneously demonstrating God's absolute sovereignty over all evil forces. Ultimately, God's purpose in allowing this suffering is redemptive, providing humanity a final opportunity to repent and turn to Him.
