The Two Witnesses - Part 2
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon on Revelation 11:1-13 details the ministry, death, and resurrection of God's two witnesses during the Tribulation's final 3.5 years. These mysterious prophets, likely Moses and Elijah, will preach repentance to the Jewish people, authenticate their divine mission with miracles like plagues and calling down fire, and remain untouchable until their testimony is complete. After 1,260 days, the Antichrist, a satanically empowered world ruler, kills them. Their unburied bodies lie in the streets of Jerusalem (spiritually called Sodom and Egypt) for 3.5 days, sparking worldwide celebration among unbelievers who hated their tormenting messages. However, God resurrects them, and they ascend to heaven, witnessed by all their enemies. This dramatic event is followed by a great earthquake in Jerusalem, killing 7,000. The surviving Jewish remnant, terrified by these supernatural occurrences, repents and gives glory to God, fulfilling prophecies about Israel's salvation at the end of the age. This passage underscores God's unwavering patience, faithfulness to His covenant promises, and His sovereign plan for both the redemption of Israel and the ultimate reign of Christ.
The Christian's DNA - Part 2
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon, "The Christian's DNA (Part 2)," examines the tests of eternal life, specifically focusing on what it means to be "born of God." A core truth is that genuine Christians, having received the new birth, will reflect God's character and conduct, akin to a child resembling their father. A crucial insight discussed is that our new birth is logically followed by our adoption, a distinct yet sequential event where God embraces believers as His children. The singular reason for this adoption is God's "great love" (agape). This divine love possesses six profound characteristics: it is **Specific**, bestowed only on genuine Christians; **Special**, a unique, choosing love that predestined believers for adoption; **Supreme**, incomprehensible in its immeasurable height, everlasting length, and sacrificial depth (evident in Christ's atonement and God loving us as His Son); **Sovereign**, an unearned gift given solely by God's gracious will; **Secure**, a permanent gift that will never be revoked; and **Saving**, manifested through Jesus's propitiation for our sins. Believers are encouraged to respond to this magnificent, adopting love with wonder, praise, meditation, unwavering belief, and constant thanksgiving.
The Two Witnesses - Part 1
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon "The Two Witnesses (Part 1)," from Revelation 11:1-13, introduces two pivotal figures during the Great Tribulation. Drawing a parallel to Elijah confronting wicked King Ahab in Israel's darkest period, Pennington explains God will send two powerful prophets to confront the Antichrist in the world's darkest hour. He situates these events in the literal second half of the seven-year Tribulation (42 months/1260 days), rejecting symbolic interpretations. God instructs John to measure a future Tribulation temple and its Jewish worshippers in Jerusalem, signifying God's ownership and promise of restoration for Israel, even as the city is trampled by Gentiles. These two "witnesses" will prophesy for Christ, delivering fresh revelation, calling for repentance, performing plagues like Moses, and wearing sackcloth as a sign of mourning. Their mission targets the Jewish people, designed to lead "all Israel" to salvation. This ministry underscores God's incredible patience, offering a final call to repentance before Christ's return and fulfilling His detailed plan for history.
You Must Be Born Again
This sermon emphasizes the crucial concept of "being born again," or regeneration, as essential for salvation and entering God's kingdom. Drawing from 1 John and Jesus's encounter with Nicodemus in John 3, Pastor Pennington asserts that this radical, pervasive change is necessary for everyone, regardless of outward morality or spiritual advantages, because humanity is naturally spiritually dead, blind, and unable to approach God. Regeneration is defined as God's sovereign, monergistic act, where the Holy Spirit powerfully summons a sinner out of spiritual death, imparting new life and a new heart. It's described as a spiritual creation, resurrection, and birth, where God cleanses from sin ("born of water") and instills new spiritual life, enabling faith, obedience, and love ("born of the Spirit"). This gracious act is solely God's will, using the Word of God as an instrument, and logically precedes and enables saving faith. The sermon concludes by highlighting that a genuinely regenerated life will demonstrate tangible results, serving as evidence of this transformative, divine work.
The Christian's DNA - Part 1
This sermon, based on 1 John 2:28-3:3, introduces the concept of "spiritual DNA," where true Christians are said to inherit their Father's divine nature, akin to physical genetic inheritance. The book of 1 John aims to provide assurance of salvation through "tests of eternal life," structured in recurring cycles. This particular section begins the second cycle, focusing on the test of obedience, which serves to distinguish genuine believers from those who merely profess faith. True Christians are commanded to "abide in Him," meaning to actively persevere in faith and obedience to Christ. This perseverance is understood as the evidence of salvation, not its cause. At Christ's return, this "new birth" will be certified: genuine believers, whose lives consistently demonstrate righteousness, will have confidence, while false Christians, whose lives do not reflect God's character, will shrink away in shame. The sermon stresses that "practicing righteousness" denotes a habitual pattern of Christ-like living and obedience, not just occasional good deeds. This consistent practice is the *result* and *proof* of the new birtha radical, God-initiated internal transformation called regenerationrather than a condition for earning salvation.
The Little Book
This sermon on Revelation 10:1-11 addresses the enduring human question: "How long, O Lord, will You permit sin and delay judgment?" It assures listeners that God's answer is imminent, as His "Day of the Lord" will soon arrive, culminating in His eternal plan. This chapter serves as an interlude, reminding believers of God's unwavering sovereignty amidst unfolding judgments. A powerful angel, identified as Christ's special representative, descends, embodying delegated authority over all creation by placing one foot on the sea and one on the land. He declares with a lion's roar that "there will be delay no longer." He swears by the eternal Creator God that, with the sounding of the seventh trumpet, "the mystery of God"His comprehensive plan of redemptionwill be finished, ushering in the kingdom of Christ. Notably, John is commanded to seal up the words of seven thunders, reinforcing that some divine truths remain hidden. John is then commanded to take and eat an open "little book." This act symbolizes digesting God's Word, which tastes "sweet as honey" in his mouth (reflecting the joy of God's justice and Christ's triumph) but turns "bitter" in his stomach (representing the sorrow over the severe judgments awaiting unbelievers).
