God With Us
Pastor Tom Pennington explores the prophecy of Immanuel, "God with us," highlighting how Jesus truly lived among us, facing life's hardships. He emphasizes that trials are an inevitable part of a fallen world, not signs of God's disfavor, but are used by God for our good, just as they were in Jesus' life. Jesus and His earthly family endured significant suffering: the shame of Mary's perceived premarital pregnancy, an arduous 90-mile journey while Mary was nine months pregnant, being rejected and forced to give birth in an animal cave, a desperate flight to Egypt to escape Herod's massacre, Joseph's early death which burdened Jesus as the family provider, and the painful rejection and disbelief of His own siblings. These trials, far from being signs of God's anger, served profound divine purposes. We learn that God always has a sovereign plan, orchestrating all circumstances for good, even if we don't understand them at the time. Jesus became our caring, sympathetic friend, understanding our struggles because He experienced them firsthand. He is also our flawless example of perfect obedience through suffering, demonstrating how trials build spiritual endurance and character.
What Child Is This? - Part 2
The sermon "What Child Is This?" (Part 2) delves into Isaiah 9:6-7, contrasting the legendary King Arthur's noble but human qualities with the divine character of Jesus Christ, the promised King. Building on last week's discussion of Jesus' unique naturehuman, God's eternal Son, and universe's Kingthis segment focuses on two of His defining character traits: "Wonderful Counselor" and "Mighty God." As the "Wonderful Counselor," Jesus addresses humanity's desperate spiritual ignorance. We are willfully unaware of God, salvation, and spiritual realities due to hard hearts. Jesus, however, is a supernatural source of wisdom, knowing us perfectly, having experienced all things (except sin), and possessing perfect divine insight. His counsel is revealed through Scripture, the Holy Spirit, gifted church teachers, and His perfect example, providing wisdom for all aspects of life and knowledge. As "Mighty God," Jesus is our divine hero and champion. We need rescue from sin's guilt, power, the troubles of a fallen world, and spiritual enemies. Jesus, the powerful El, is impervious to defeat. He redeems us from sin's curse and practice, protects us from danger, preserves us through life's difficulties, fuels our spiritual growth, ensures our ultimate salvation, will defeat all enemies, and will reign eternally as King.
What Child Is This? - Part 1
Pastor Tom Pennington's Christmas sermon, "What Child Is This?", counters modern skepticism by exploring Isaiah 9:6-7, which prophesies Jesus Christ's unique nature. The book of Isaiah, meaning "Yahweh is salvation," describes God bringing light into a world in spiritual darkness (Isaiah 8). This light, Jesus, unexpectedly dawned in Galilee of the Gentiles, where He began His ministry to reach the world (Matthew 4). Jesus' arrival brings immense joy, stemming from God's promise to rescue humanity from sin and its consequences, ultimately ending war and establishing peace. This rescue is accomplished through a unique child, whose nature encompasses three defining qualities. First, He is a fully human person, born of a virgin, enabling Him to be our substitute and understand us. Second, He is Gods eternal, one-of-a-kind Son, existing before His birth and uniquely given by God. Third, He is the universes King, bearing all government and authority. His reign, both spiritual and future literal, demands immediate acknowledgment and submission from all, as His rightful subjects, for salvation and reconciliation with God.
Antichrist - Part 2
The sermon on Revelation 13:1-10 describes the Antichrist, a future evil world ruler empowered by Satan during the seven-year Tribulation. While the Antichrist will rise to global political power, display a beastly character, and even experience a counterfeit death and resurrection, his entire career is ultimately governed by God's sovereign decree. God permits his blasphemous words, his 42-month rule, his successful persecution and killing of saints, and his global political dominion. Antichrist's reign will be marked by arrogant blasphemy against God and His people, violent persecution of believers, and universal political and religious worship from all unbelieversthose whose names are not written in the Lambs Book of Life. Believers during this time are called to patiently accept God's providence, whether it means captivity or death, demonstrating perseverance and faithfulness. The sermon concludes by highlighting Gods ultimate judgment of evil, salvation through His gracious, unconditional election, and Christ's power to preserve those in His Book of Life. This underscores God's unwavering control even amidst the greatest displays of evil.
Love as a Sign of Life - Part 3
Tom Pennington's sermon "1 John Love as a Sign of Life (Part 3)" defines biblical love in contrast to common flawed ideas, such as self-love, reciprocal love, or love as a mere feeling. True love is exemplified by Jesus Christ's deliberate, voluntary, self-sacrificial act of laying down His life for His people, demonstrating a love that desires the good of others, even to the point of ultimate self-sacrifice. This divine example establishes a moral obligation for believers to love one another sacrificially, not just with words or feelings, but "in deed and truth." John questions how the love of God can reside in someone who possesses resources, sees a brother in need, yet closes their heart against them. Practical, selfless care for fellow Christians, which extends beyond heroic acts to everyday service, is presented as a crucial test of eternal life. Believers are encouraged to excel in this love by intentionally reaching out, giving to those in need, and personally engaging in the practical care of their spiritual family. This active, self-sacrificing love for God's people is a fundamental hallmark of a true follower of Jesus Christ.
Q&A
Pastor Tom Pennington's Q&A session covered various theological and practical topics, beginning with ground rules for participants. He explained disease and sickness as consequences of the Fall, yet used by God to cultivate perseverance and hope in believers, requesting prayers for his wife, Sheila, undergoing cancer treatment. Regarding "The Chosen" series, Pennington expressed concerns about its fictionalized content and creator's theological leanings, advising viewers to prioritize scripture over dramatizations. He noted that superstitious phrases are acceptable if used in jest without genuine doubt in God's sovereignty. On forgiveness, he differentiated between a constant spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation that requires the wrongdoer's engagement. Self-defense was affirmed as biblically permissible to protect innocent lives. Pennington clarified that Old Testament believers were regenerated by the Holy Spirit, with key New Testament differences being baptism into Christ's body and a renewed abiding presence. He addressed election by stating God *passes by* the non-elect, who receive justice, while bestowing grace upon the elect. Lordship salvation was affirmed as the historical understanding of saving faith, encompassing a willingness to follow Christ. Demons cannot indwell believers but can tempt them externally. Individuals "deconstructing" their faith were identified as apostates who were never truly converted.
