God of Eternity
The sermon "God of Eternity" by Tom Pennington delves into the mysterious concept of time, contrasting humanity's limited understanding and experience with God's eternal nature. While humans are driven and controlled by time, experiencing its swift passage, God exists entirely outside of itHe is uninfluenced, unmoved, and unhurried. God's eternity is defined by three core components: He had no beginning, He will have no end, and crucially, in His being, there is no succession of moments. God created time, sees all time (past, present, and future) with equal vividness, and yet actively relates to and acts within human history. This profound attribute carries significant implications for believers. God's eternity guarantees His absolute sovereignty, ensuring He is perpetually in charge. It strengthens confidence in His promises, both for blessings and judgments, as His plans unfold on His perfect, unhurried timetable. Furthermore, God's eternal nature provides a steadfast anchor and refuge for our transient, time-driven lives, offering security amidst life's challenges. Ultimately, recognizing Gods timelessness alongside our innate sense of eternity and fleeting existence drives us to Christ, through whom eternal life and God's boundless, everlasting grace are revealed and secured for all who believe.
Unchangeable
The sermon details God's unchangeability, or immutability, as a foundational divine attribute. Unlike the constantly changing world and humanity, God never differs from Himself; He remains constant in His being, perfections, purposes, and promises. Biblical passages such as Malachi 3:6, Hebrews 1:10-12, and James 1:17 affirm this, demonstrating God's unwavering character, eternal plans (unaffected by human limitations), covenant faithfulness, and revealed truth. While Scripture occasionally describes God "repenting" or changing His mind (e.g., Genesis 6:5, Jonah), these are interpreted not as alterations to His eternal plan but as His immutable responses to human repentance or sin, often representing warnings with implied conditions. The doctrine of impassability clarifies that God is not subject to involuntary emotional shifts but chooses to be affected by humanity's experiences. The practical implications of God's immutability are profound: it establishes the Bible as a trustworthy and enduring guide, guarantees an unchanging relationship with believers, ensures permanent forgiveness for sins, promises certain punishment for the wicked, and, most crucially, guarantees our eternal salvation, offering strong encouragement and hope.
In High Definition - Part 1
In "In High Definition, Part 1 Philippians 2:19-30," Tom Pennington introduces Christian biography as God's truth in "high definition," offering clear, living examples of how to apply biblical principles. He points to Hebrews 11 as an illustration and then focuses on Paul's use of Timothy in Philippians 2:19-30 as a high-definition model of an excellent servant. Pennington outlines six essential character qualities that made Timothy invaluable: 1. **A biblical mindset:** Timothy was a "kindred spirit" to Paul, having learned to think and act like him through deep engagement with Scripture. 2. **Genuine concern for people:** He genuinely cared for the welfare of others, motivated by sincere compassion rather than self-interest. 3. **Selfless devotion to Christ:** Timothy prioritized Christ's interests over his own, demonstrating radical self-denial. 4. **A pattern of faithfulness:** He possessed "proven worth," exhibiting consistent dependability and reliability over years of service. 5. **A passion for evangelism:** Actively engaged in spreading the gospel, he lived with a deep desire to see others come to faith. 6. **A humble spirit:** Timothy served Paul "like a child serving his father," willingly taking a humble position and foregoing personal ambition, even when Paul's own status was low.
No Whining Allowed - Part 2
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon "No Whining Allowed (Part 2)" on Philippians 2:14-18 urges believers to "Do all things without grumbling or disputing." Grumbling expresses dissatisfaction with circumstances, while disputing questions God's plans, often revealing an "unbelieving heart." The sermon outlines three key reasons for this command. Firstly, for personal assurance: refraining from grumbling proves one to be a "blameless and innocent child of God above reproach," evidencing genuine trust. Conversely, grumbling, as seen with Israel, can expose a lack of faith. Secondly, for the unsaved: Christians live "in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation." By not grumbling and "holding fast the word of life" (the gospel), their exemplary behavior and message "shine as lights in the world," offering a powerful contrast to a self-pitying world and making their witness credible. Thirdly, for spiritual leaders: a non-grumbling life ensures that leaders like Paul "did not run in vain nor toil in vain." Believers' faithfulness brings God glory and validates their mentors' ministry at the "day of Christ." Paul himself, despite imprisonment and suffering, exemplified this by rejoicing, seeing his trials as a "drink offering.
The Truth About God
The sermon "Systematic Theology: The Truth About God" emphasizes that modern perceptions of God are often "too human," advocating for a return to Scripture for an accurate understanding of His nature. It introduces God's "attributes" as essential, indivisible truths, like facets of a diamond, revealing His glory. The core attribute explored is God's "independence" or "self-existence" (aseity). This means God relies on nothing outside Himself for His being, existing eternally and perfectly complete. Scriptural examples from Genesis, Exodus, Job, Psalms, John, Acts, and Romans demonstrate that God is the uncreated Creator, needing nothing from His creation, and whose purposes are entirely His own, uninfluenced by external factors. This doctrine carries profound implications for believers: 1. **Purpose:** We exist *for* God, not the reverse, to bring Him glory. 2. **Sin:** Living independently is the ultimate challenge to God's self-existence; true faith involves humble dependence and gratitude. 3. **Worship/Service:** Our worship does not fulfill any need in God, but rather acknowledges our profound need for Him and His mercy. 4. **Love:** God's independence underscores His immense love; needing nothing, He chose to create, set His love upon us, and delights in His people.
No Whining Allowed - Part 1
Tom Pennington's sermon, "No Whining Allowed (Part 1)," identifies widespread complaining, grumbling, and disputing as serious sins that challenge God's character, power, wisdom, and goodness. He links these behaviors to an "intellectual rebellion" against God. Pennington draws heavily from Old Testament accounts, particularly Israel's wilderness wanderings (referenced in 1 Corinthians 10 and Philippians 2:14-18), where God severely judged His people for their grumbling against circumstances and provision, which He perceived as directed against Himself. Examples like the vineyard workers and Jonah illustrate how perceived injustices lead to dissatisfaction and arguing with God's plans. Grumbling is defined as expressing dissatisfaction with circumstances or people, ultimately against God. Disputing involves internal skepticism or criticism that questions God's actions and intentions. When we complain, we essentially set ourselves up as God's judge. To overcome these sins, the sermon advocates for unconditional trust in God. This requires intentionally recalling God's sovereign character, His continuous work on our behalf, His immense greatness in contrast to our smallness, and His primary goal of our sanctification over our comfort. We are urged not to repeat Israel's fatal mistakes, but to embrace God's plan with unwavering trust and joy.
