When Your World is Shaken
The sermon, prompted by the war in Ukraine and personal hardships, emphasizes finding biblical perspective and trust in God amidst a fallen world. Drawing from Psalm 46, Pastor Pennington highlights three core truths about God: First, God is our **refuge**an inaccessible shelter and stronghold. Our security rests not in our faith, but in Gods trustworthiness, understood by knowing His character. We "make" Him our refuge by actively trusting Him and pouring out our hearts in prayer. Second, God is our **strength**. He doesn't merely provide strength; He *is* our strength, empowering our weakness with His omnipotent power to endure trouble. This divine exchange means believers can handle any circumstance, not through their own ability, but through His. Third, God is a **very present help**. He is instantly and constantly available, eager to be found, and abundantly powerful to assist His people in distress. This presence, encompassing His infinite power ("Lord of hosts") and fatherly love ("God of Jacob"), ensures we are never abandoned. Therefore, the message concludes, we "will not fear" even if our world collapses. We are commanded to "cease striving" and "know that I am God," trusting His sovereign plan and perfect wisdom for ultimate exaltation.
Tribulation Saints - Part 2
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon on Revelation 7:1-17, "Tribulation Saints (Part 2)," explores God's unwavering sovereignty and redemptive plan amidst the future seven-year Tribulation. He reminds listeners that God remains King, unmoved by worldly chaos, and His purpose is always to save. Revelation 7 serves as a dramatic interlude in the Tribulation's judgments. Verses 1-8 describe God commissioning and sealing 144,000 Jewish missionaries (12,000 from each of Israel's twelve tribes). Protected by God, these evangelists will preach the gospel with unprecedented effectiveness during the first half of the Tribulation. The sermon's primary focus, Revelation 7:9-17, reveals the immense fruit of their ministry: a "great multitude which no one could count," hailing from "every nation and all tribes, peoples, and languages." This countless throng stands in heaven before God and the Lamb, clothed in white robes and holding palm branches, celebrating their victory. An elder identifies these as "tribulation saints"believers who "come out of the great tribulation." Their white robes symbolize their salvation, "made white in the blood of the Lamb," signifying cleansing through Christ's sacrificial death, appropriated by faith. Joined by angels, this multitude offers unceasing, loud praise to God for their salvation.
It Matters What You Believe - Part 1
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon on 1 John 2:18-27 focuses on the doctrinal test of spiritual life, complementing moral and social tests. He argues that true Christians know, believe, and persevere in biblically orthodox teaching about Jesus Christ and His gospel, akin to how medical definitions determine physical life or death. John's declaration, "it is the last hour," signifies the entire period between Christ's first and second comings, a time marked by intensified spiritual conflict and Satan's destructive plan. The appearance of "many antichrists" (false teachers) is a theological sign of this era. These false teachers, who oppose or counterfeit the biblical Jesus and gospel, often originate within the church, redefine core truths, and eventually defect from true, biblically orthodox fellowships. Their departure provides a "practical explanation" for defections: it reveals they were never truly part of the "invisible church" of genuine believers. While false Christians abandon true churches if their erroneous doctrines aren't embraced, true Christians remain committed to biblical churches and teaching. This perseverance is not a result of human strength but God's protective power, ensuring that those genuinely saved will continue in faith.
Taking Control of Every Thought
In "Taking Control of Every Thought," Pastor Tom Pennington emphasizes the biblical call for believers to discipline their minds and control their thoughts, an issue he considers far-reaching. He identifies nine common sources of thoughts: our basic nature (flesh or spirit), God (through providence and His Word), Satan (who indirectly influences thoughts), our unredeemed "flesh" (leading to sinful thinking like anger, lust, and bitterness), the world's philosophies, other people, ingrained thinking habits, emotions, and external circumstances (which merely serve as a stage for other influences). Pennington highlights two core biblical commands: to control every thought, taking them captive to Christ's obedience (2 Corinthians 10:5), and to cultivate godly, biblical thoughts through consistent meditation on Scripture (Joshua 1:8, Romans 12:2). Crucial implications include recognizing that *we* are in control of our thoughts, not our minds, and the vital practice of "stopping listening to yourself and starting talking to yourself" with divine truth. Practical applications involve consciously choosing thoughts, forcing mental focus, limiting digital distractions, scheduling time for less productive activities, using lists for ideas, writing to concentrate, choosing a daily Scripture for meditation, and regularly preaching biblical truths to oneself.
Tribulation Saints - Part 1
Pastor Tom Pennington challenges the belief that no one can be saved during the Tribulation if they previously rejected the gospel, asserting this view misrepresents God's saving character. He explains Revelation 7 as an interlude between divine judgments, revealing God's "unparalleled grace" during the Tribulation. This chapter answers "who can stand?" by introducing two groups. First, God commissions 144,000 Jewish missionaries12,000 from each of Israel's tribes, literally understoodto spread the gospel worldwide. These "bond-servants" are sealed by God on their foreheads, signifying His ownership and providing protection from further divine wrath and enemies until their mission is complete. They serve as "first fruits" of a broader Jewish salvation. Second, through their ministry, an innumerable multitude from every nation will come to faith. This passage highlights God's unwavering heart as a Savior, the necessity of the gospel, and emphasizes the priority of evangelism for believers today. Gods ultimate purpose is redeeming a people for His Son.
Do Not Love the World
Pastor Tom Pennington addresses the neglected biblical concept of worldliness from 1 John 2:15-17, urging believers not to love "the world nor the things in the world." He dispels common misunderstandings, clarifying that worldliness is not isolation from sinners, legalistic rules, asceticism, or self-justification, but rather a deep affection and devotion to the "kosmos"Satan's organized system hostile to God. This evil system manifests through "the lust of the flesh" (self-gratification of fallen desires), "the lust of the eyes" (covetousness and sinful pleasure in what's seen), and "the boastful pride of life" (self-promotion at God's expense). Loving this world is incompatible with loving God, stems from sinful internal lusts, aligns one with Satan's kingdom, and is foolishly short-sighted as the world is passing away. The sermon concludes by presenting this teaching as a test of genuine faith, a warning against temptation, and an encouragement that true Christians, through faith in Christ, will ultimately overcome the world.
