The Nature of Saving Faith
This sermon on 1 John 5:1-13, "The Nature of Saving Faith," distinguishes between superficial forms of faithnatural, historical, miraculous, and temporaryand genuine, saving faith. True saving faith is supernatural, originating as a divine gift accompanying the "new birth" or regeneration. The core message is that "the one who believes God's testimony about the biblical Jesus and the biblical gospel has been born of God and has eternal life." Saving faith comprises three elements: **knowledge** of Christ's truths, intellectual **assent** to their reality, and personal **trust** in Jesus as Savior and Lord, signifying a total commitment of one's being. Critically, the sermon asserts that the new birth logically and causally *precedes* saving faith. While they occur simultaneously, God's act of regenerating a spiritually dead individual enables them to believe. This order is vital, as it counters human pride, shapes a God-centered understanding of salvation, guides evangelism to faithfully declare the Word, strengthens believers' assurance, provides hope for perseverance, reduces non-believers to spiritual beggars seeking grace, and ultimately gives all glory to God.
Babylon is Fallen! - Part 2
Revelation 17-18 details the ultimate destruction of evil, focusing first on religious and then political Babylon. A worldwide false religious system, depicted as a harlot supported by Antichrist (the scarlet beast) and his ten allied kings, will dominate the initial Tribulation. This "Babylon the Great" embodies all satanic, deceptive religion, deceiving humanity and persecuting true believers. However, at the Tribulation's midpoint, following Antichrist's faked death and resurrection, he and his allies will shockingly turn on the harlot, violently destroying it to establish Antichrist as the sole object of worship. This seemingly self-serving act is, in fact, divinely orchestrated, as God "put it in their hearts to execute His purpose," ensuring the eradication of all false worship. Ultimately, Antichrist and his forces will wage war against Jesus Christ at Armageddon but will face a decisive "slaughter," with Christ, as "Lord of lords and King of kings," achieving complete victory alongside His "called, chosen, and faithful" saints. The sermon emphasizes that all false religion is satanic and hateful to God, who will not share His glory with any other object of worship; one day, God alone will be worshipped and glorified, fulfilling His sovereign plan through history's unfolding events.
The Shepherd of Your Soul
The sermon, drawing from Isaiah 53, highlights God's inherent nature as a Savior, a truth embodied by the prophet's name ("Yahweh is salvation"). It identifies "the Servant of Yahweh" as Jesus Christ, whose mission fulfills prophecies about His vicarious death. The central message revolves around Isaiah 53:6: "All of us like sheep have gone astray. Each of us has turned to his own way, but the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him." Firstly, humanity is depicted as "sheep who strayed." Despite God's constant, gracious care and provision since creation, every individual has deliberately chosen "his own way," engaging in rebellion, moral perversion, and sin. This self-willed estrangement from God leaves us spiritually lost, enslaved to sin, and ultimately empty, unable to find our way back. Secondly, our only hope is "the Lamb of God who saves." God, driven by His sovereign love and grace, orchestrated salvation. This was accomplished through the Son's substitution: Jesus voluntarily bore the full weight of humanity's transgressions. The mechanism is "imputation," where our legal guilt and sins were credited to Christ on the cross, and in return, His righteousness is credited to believers.
Babylon is Fallen! - Part 1
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon on Revelation 17-18, "Revelation Babylon is Fallen! (Part 1)," explores the nature and destruction of "Babylon the Great," a global false religious system. He begins by asserting that all humans are innately wired to worship; choosing not to worship the true God inevitably leads to idolatry, often rooted in self-centered gratification and self-rule. This false religion, originating from Satan, will reach its zenith during the future Tribulation. Revelation 17 portrays this system as the "Great Harlot," symbolizing apostate religion. Her influence is global, encompassing nations and their leaders, and she accrues immense wealth and power, deceptively adorned in luxury. She initially rides a scarlet beast, representing Antichrist, who leverages her for the first three-and-a-half years of the Tribulation to build his empire. This harlot will be "drunk with the blood of the saints," instigating widespread persecution of true believers. However, Antichrist will ultimately turn against and destroy her, abolishing all other worship to demand exclusive devotion to himself. Pennington concludes with the assurance that Jesus Christ, the King of kings, will decisively overcome and destroy all rebellious systems, securing His ultimate victory.
This Is Love - Part 5
Pastor Tom Pennington's sermon "1 John This Is Love (Part 5)" clarifies the nature of a believer's love for God, distinguishing it from mere sentimentality, religious ritual, external conformity, intellectual knowledge, or simple obedience. Drawing from 1 John 4:7-21, he asserts that genuine love for God is a direct response to His prior, initiating love for us, enabled by the Holy Spirit. This authentic love manifests in several ways: exclusive allegiance, faithful obedience to His Word, genuine affection, and total devotion with one's entire being. It is also inherently linked to loving God's Son, delighting in Him, hating sin, and persevering through trials. Crucially, the sermon emphasizes that love for God is inseparable from love for fellow Christians; professing to love God while harboring hatred or a lack of love for a brother or sister is presented as a lie, as one cannot love the unseen God if they fail to love His visible image in others.
This Is Love - Part 4
In "1 John This Is Love (Part 4)," Pastor Tom Pennington highlights the Holy Spirit's role in cultivating a mature understanding of God's love for believers, which is vital for sanctification and confidence in the Day of Judgment. Referencing 1 John 4:7-21, he explains that God's nature is love, profoundly demonstrated by sending His Son as propitiation for sins and bestowing the Holy Spirit. While our love for God and others is a necessary response, the Spirit primarily works to deepen our comprehension of God's love *for us*. This mature understanding of God's love, continually rooted in the gospel through Scripture, is the strongest motivator for holiness and enables believers to overcome the fear of judgment. Our confidence doesn't stem from our imperfect love or deeds, but from our position in Christ, knowing "as He is, so also are we in this world" loved and favored children of God. Perfect love, meaning a complete grasp of God's love for us, dispels the fear of punishment because, for believers, there is no condemnation. Conversely, persistent fear of judgment signifies an underdeveloped understanding of God's boundless affection.
