Heaven's Hallelujah Chorus - Part 2
The sermon "Revelation Heaven's Hallelujah Chorus (Part 2)" interprets Revelation 19:1-10, focusing on the "wedding supper of the Lamb" as the fourth reason for heaven's ecstatic praise. Pastor Tom Pennington highlights that at the end of the Tribulation, before Christ's Second Coming, all angels and redeemed saints will erupt in "Hallelujahs" because divine justice is done, human rebellion is over, Christ's kingdom has come, and the Lamb's marriage is finally here. This "marriage of the Lamb" metaphor signifies the intimate and indissoluble union between Christ and His church (all true believers). Key aspects include believers' love and submission to Christ, His profound love, delight, and commitment to care for His church, His eternal covenant, and the promise of loving, personal companionship akin to the best human marriages. The "bride's readiness" comes from the "righteous acts of the saints," which are not earned but grace-enabled, reflecting Christ's imputed righteousness and believers' sanctification. The "marriage supper" itself pictures the eternal blessing, communion, and fellowship saints will enjoy with God, likely initiating with Christ's millennial reign and continuing into eternity.
The War in Israel
The text offers a biblical perspective on the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, emphasizing it as an event of profound significance. Historically, the conflict traces back to God's eternal promise of the land to Abraham's descendants, specifically through Isaac (Jews), contrasting with the lineage of Ishmael (Arabs), whose descendants established Islam. This ongoing strife between these groups is central to the Middle East's turmoil. Theologically, the war is seen as the latest battle in Satan's long war against God, targeting Israelthe nation from which the Messiah came. Satan, a murderer, uses demonically inspired false religions like Islam to advance his destructive agenda against God's people. Yet, God remains sovereign, using even these tragic events to accomplish His redemptive plan, ultimately saving a multitude from every nation. Prophetically, God promises to preserve Israel, despite its current suffering under judgment for rejecting its Messiah. This judgment is temporary, as God will ultimately save all living descendants of Abraham at Christ's Second Coming. Personally, believers are called to repent and trust in God's sovereign plan, praying for the salvation of both Jews and Arabs, and for the Messiah's return to bring true peace to Jerusalem.
Heaven's Hallelujah Chorus! - Part 1
Revelation 19:1-10 describes heaven's thunderous "Hallelujah Chorus" at the end of the Tribulation, anticipating Christ's return. Pastor Tom Pennington highlights three profound reasons for this unrestrained praise. Firstly, divine justice is finally done. Heaven rejoices over the complete destruction of "Babylon"Antichrist's wicked empire and religious systemwhich corrupted the earth and martyred God's servants. This act demonstrates God's true and righteous judgments, avenging the innocent and ensuring every sin is punished, either through Christ's sacrifice or personal judgment. Secondly, human rebellion is finally over. The everlasting smoke from Babylon's destruction symbolizes the permanent end of mankind's defiance against God. Heaven celebrates the ultimate cessation of all evil and sin. Thirdly, Christ's kingdom has finally come. Angels, the 24 elders (representing all Old and New Testament believers), and four living creatures unite in overwhelming praise. They declare that "the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns," signifying the inauguration of Christ's millennial kingdom on Earth, where He will rule in righteousness for a thousand years. This fulfills centuries of prayers for "Your kingdom come," inviting believers to anticipate and join heaven's joyful celebration of God's ultimate victory.
The Rapture of the Church
Tom Pennington discusses the "Rapture of the Church," defining it as believers being "snatched away" to meet Christ. He highlights the exegetical dilemma caused by biblical passages that suggest Christ's return is both imminent and preceded by specific signs. Pennington advocates for a pre-tribulation Rapture, proposing a two-stage Second Coming: the church is raptured before the seven-year tribulation, followed by Christ's physical return to Earth with His saints at the tribulation's conclusion. He supports this view with several arguments: the distinct differences between descriptions of the Rapture and the Second Coming; Christ's promise to protect the church from God's wrath (Revelation 3:10); the church's notable absence from earth in Revelation 6-18, which details the tribulation; and the lack of New Testament epistle warnings preparing the church to endure the tribulation. Furthermore, he argues that 1 Thessalonians 4 and John 14 best support a pre-tribulation timing, and that a rapture during or after the tribulation would be unnecessary.
The Forgiveness of Our Sins
The text introduces the Hebrew concept of *go'el*, a kinsman-redeemer responsible for protecting family, buying back property or slaves, and ensuring justice. Job identified God as his *go'el*. Pastor Tom Pennington explains that Ephesians 1:7 reveals Jesus Christ as our Kinsman-Redeemer, who accomplished our redemption and the forgiveness of sins. Our forgiveness is rooted "in Him," meaning in our spiritual union with Christ, who acts as our representative. Before Christ, we were slaves to sin and condemned criminals under God's just law, deserving eternal death. The "cost of our forgiveness" was paid "through His blood"Christ's sacrificial death on the cross, a ransom paid to God the Father. This echoes the Old Testament sacrificial system where innocent blood atoned for sin, but only Christ's perfect sacrifice could fully satisfy divine justice. The "reality of our forgiveness" means God removes our legal guilt and cancels the penalty of eternal death for all our deliberate "trespasses," past, present, and future. This is a complete and irreversible pardon, coupled with justification where Christ's perfect righteousness is credited to us. The "source of our forgiveness" is "according to the riches of His grace," God's infinite perfection that delights in bestowing undeserved good.
