The book of James is written to encourage and help Christians to understand and embrace the true Christian faith and reject that which is a counterfeit faith. In other words, James wants professing believers to understand whether they’ve embraced true saving faith or non-saving deadly faith. And true faith, according to James, always produces a life that is marked by obedience to God and His Word and a love for Jesus Christ and His people.

James teaches that showing partiality based on race, wealth, or status is a serious sin, reminding us that God has chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom. When someone enters your life who can offer you nothing in return, do you see them through the lens of God's grace, or does your heart secretly prefer those who offer some personal advantage?

Pastor Tom takes us into the "Royal Law"—the command to love your neighbor as yourself. James makes the staggering point that to stumble in this one area of partiality is to become a transgressor of the entire Law. Do you realize that harboring prejudice is not a "minor flaw," but a rebellion against the King that shatters the unity of His holy standards?

For the believer, mercy triumphs over judgment, and our lives should reflect the grace we have received in Christ.
