Defining the Church
What is the church? It's a question that should be simple for Christians to answer—yet in our post-Christian world, it's becoming increasingly difficult. Traditional biblical understanding has been obscured by unbiblical models: seeker-sensitive movements, online churches, and countless other approaches that have left many confused about what the New Testament actually teaches. Join Tom Pennington as he explores Scripture to help Christians in Defining the Church.
Part 1
When you consider the teaching of the New Testament, it is clear that those who have been redeemed by Christ are to have lives centered on the church. Throughout the apostles' teaching and preaching ministries, they never wavered from being connected to the church. They sought to teach the church, train the church, pray for the church, and engage in daily life with the church.
Part 2
What is the difference between the "visible church" and the "invisible church"—and why should it matter? Well, the truth is, these distinctions matter profoundly, because Scripture never envisions a Christian who claims to belong to Jesus Christ yet remains disconnected from a local church. Perhaps that describes you right now—you profess faith in Christ, but you're disengaged, disconnected, and standing at a distance from His church.
Part 3
How do you truly understand something as profound as the Lord’s church? The New Testament doesn't give us just one definition—it gives us a rich tapestry of metaphors: the body, the bride, the building, and many more. Each one adds color and depth, revealing different facets of what Christ's church truly is.
Part 4
What does the New Testament teach about the church that the Lord Jesus Christ died for? And what does this profound reality mean for you as a believer today? It's crucial that we turn to Scripture—not tradition, not trends—to shape our understanding of the role we play in the local church.
Part 5
Today, we discover something remarkable: Christ serves as both the foundation and cornerstone of a spiritual structure—and you are a living stone being carefully fitted into that temple. When you gather with God's people, you're not simply entering a physical building—you're assembling as God's temple, the place where He dwells among His people.
Part 7
The Nicene Creed offers this: "We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church." These four attributes define Christ's true church with clear biblical support. Today, Pastor Tom uses this historic creed as a framework to explore what Scripture teaches about the church. Our prayer is that God's Word will deepen your understanding and draw you more fully into the life Christ designed for His people—for your good and the glory of Jesus Christ.
Part 8
According to the Nicene Creed, the church can be summarized in four powerful words: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Last time, we began unpacking what Scripture reveals through these ancient marks. Today, we conclude this series with a personal challenge: What does your commitment to Jesus Christ look like in practice?
